October
2007:
Well
the Fall of '07 has seen the call of the Markers. The flat and calm waters
of the Lake and Bay have lured the scullers and kayakers to the scenic
beauty of the bay. The markers are coming home for sure with Marker One
setting the 6.5 mile row from the boathouse as a goal for many, roundtrip
mileage. The kayaking members have been excelling and the recent Colorado
100 was completed by three superb kayakers. It has always been that the
fall of the year, with winter approaching, is the best time to row. If
you had to rank the times of the year it would be FallSpringWinterSummer.
Since we row 52 weeks a year (in shorts or winter attire) we are
prejudice of course. The best time of the year for us is actually
now. Then next week it will be then, and in February it will be
February. For sure the best time is FallSpringWinterSummer, with no break
in the outings. The row-a-thon for the March of Dimes is fast approaching.
Many members have signed up getting commitments from friends, coworkers
and family. Starting November 1 we will track each members miles
and their contributors will be informed for the final contribution
to a great cause, the March of Dimes. In the past we have row-a-thons
for the American Cancer Society and the United Way. Thousands of
Dollars have been earned and contributed to the great charities
of our community. We are looking forward to setting new reocords with
the 2007 Row-a-Thon. The club camping outing is just a few weeks
away. October 19-21 will be a great time at the Canyon of the Eagles
in Burnett, Tx. at Lake Buchannan. Primitive camping at its best,
tents side by side, the three sites will be fitting for our members.
Some of the folks are heading up Friday PM to get set up, the majority
coming up early Saturday. The kayaking training will begin Saturday
at noon. As rumor has it, we have maxed out the kayaks of the vendor
at the park. We will be rowing North for the waterfalls and eagle
sitings, then heading home for some great cook outs and camp fire
stories. Kim
has quite a few to tell us and we are looking forward to her steaks.
She and Nick have the Captain's attention, and who will be the
winner of the cook off. Then Sunday heading South to the islands
and the main lake. All in all the training, camping, cooking, wine,
spirits, cookouts, resting and kayaking up and up will be the story
of the weekend for sure. Well, with the Markers Club going strong,
the camping set and the Row-a-Thon in motion we will be heading
on for some absolutely great time. See you guys at the Lake.
