USRC Rowing Center 20th Anniversary
The USRC Rowing Club, during the year 2007-2008, is celebrating its 20th year as the outdoor club of the southeast as well as the ideal location to find rowing excellence. The club, located at the Watergate Yachting Center on FM 2094 between Kemah and South Shore Harbour, has the following weekend schedules for the next few months:
Ladies Weekend with free certification offered on sculling
South Shore Singles Rowing club sculling Saturdays 10am
Seniors and Juniors Programs with free sculling certification offered
"Jazz on the dock of the bay" with jazz musicians Saturday evenings
Dining Cruises. The dining cruises are also offered on weekdays as well as weekends. See www.houstonrowing.com for details on the club and the dining cruises. Also, during the weekends the coaches will be giving free "mini" certification lessons on sculling. For information call 281-532-1518.
The club, which started in 1988, has been offering a full range of outdoor and water based health alternatives to the residents of southeast Texas since its inception. The advantages of driving to a floating dock and launching is an offering seldom seen in this area. Just a short drive from any of the surroundings areas the club allows the members to come with only their keys, everything else is included. From the hot and cold fresh water, coffee, and hot chocolate to the kayaks, canoes, sail boats, dinning cruises and sculls, the USRC Rowing Center is an offering anyone interested in outdoor life should inspect.
If Otis Reding had ever visited the club he may have changed his now infamous song to something like "sittin on the dock of the lake, how can life be so great? Watching the sculls row away out to Galveston Bay". The USRC Rowing Center has been training, visiting, assisting and just plain having fun for 20+ years now. In recent months the club raised nearly $1,000 for the children's fund of the United Way during its row-a-thon. Members obtained pledges and rowed for charity. The event was a total success, the members doubling the original goal.
As a side, note, the club is a member of the Unites States Rowing Association and will be a sponsor for the month of May's rowing month. Along with the Watergate Yachting Center, the club offers a host of alternatives in addition to the water-based activities. The annual tennis tournament will be coming up in April and the walk-a-thon for cancer will be held in June.
The club's motto is "There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats...or with boats..In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter." --Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows. The Houston Rowing Club agrees totally with Mr Grahame. Rule number one for the coaches and members is safety, rule number two is we stay dry and rule number three is always fun, always safely. During the celebration year there will be various events so watch the local papers for the fun in the sun offerings the club has going on.
The fun and events are almost daily.
